Design system

Workshop1 Design System

The shared visual language, primitives, and interaction patterns behind Workshop1.

Workshop1 is a paper-and-ink system built for real workshop work. It uses a warm near-white canvas, near-black ink, hairline structure, restrained elevation, and Geist throughout. The current Workshop1 website is the visual source of truth; product surfaces apply the same foundations at a denser operational scale.

Foundations

Colour, type, spacing, material, icons, and theming.

Components

The reusable primitives and their supported APIs.

Draft

Patterns

Proven combinations for complete product tasks.

Ownership

packages/design owns base brand tokens. packages/ui owns the semantic theme, typography, and reusable primitives. Product apps own domain compositions. apps/website owns the ruled marketing layout and this documentation.

Use a shared primitive before adding application styles. Add a primitive variant only when the same need appears across consumers. Keep customer, vehicle, job, permission, and other business behaviour in the product app.

Public library direction

@workshop1/ui is an internal workspace package today. This documentation records the current contract so it can support a later public component library without pretending that a public package, versioning policy, or installation path already exists. Public extraction starts when the package has an explicit support and release contract.

Source of truth

The live implementation wins when documentation and code disagree. Update the example and guidance in the same change as a token, component API, or interaction change.
