Contextual absence and failure states with a clear next action.
An empty state helps a person begin or adjust their view. An error state explains what failed and how to recover.

The customer has no email address. Add one, then try again.
Keep the message inside the area it describes. Use Empty for a stable content region and Alert for a contextual issue. Errors that block an entire page should include a retry or safe destination. Field errors stay with their fields.
Avoid vague copy such as “Something went wrong” when the system knows which action failed. Do not erase the content a person was editing.
